If you generally use your camera on ‘auto’ or ‘program’ settings, try taking an image of the same object, using a tripod, and use the different ‘scene’ settings on your camera. You will be able to see what difference it makes to the image.

This may help you with your general photography. Only use the ‘night’ settings at night of course!
